I suggest making your modem-router invisible! Copy its settings. Do a factory reset. Now it should offer PPPoE to your attached open source router. Your open source router gets its own external IP. Its like the modem-router is not even there!
You can even attach a couple routers to get multiple external IPs. WARNING: This may not work for some ISPs, and some modems. Google it before doing it. It might also remove some bandwidth caps on your modem given you faster service! -Curtis.
