for. I just want xterm, not a full desk top.
Does anyone have any info on setting up such a configuration? Maybe
this was/is a Solaris specific thing?

This may do it, just VNC one window. http://metavnc.sourceforge.net/
I have not used it, but am setting up a test for it now.
