I used VNC and it's variants for a long time on my boxen, until I
started NoMachine (http://www.nomachine.com/) which IIRC, tunnels
everything through SSH natively.  Quite nice.  It's been a while since I
had a need to use it, so I cannot speak for it's newer versions, but
when I used it (pre 3.x days, I think) it was slick.
