For sure if plugging your modem direct to your PC, then that eliminates your PC and internet/ISP connection. So all that is left is the part you removed, your router...
Google's changes have nothing to do, they are just ULA type of rules changes and your problem started WAY before that. My suspicion is that your router has the wrong MTU settings. Reboot it . Not only a software reboot via the web interface. Unplug the sucker from hydro for 1 minute and power it back.
