I understood that the underlying engine was Linux, but the author was
discussing the gui interface. The newer interface is the pits as far as I am
concerned.

I work with it because I believe I will have to adapt, or become a dinosaur.
Shucks, is there something wrong with Gnome 2 interfaces.  I think not.

Not to start an argument here Leslie, but I think you missed the point of the
ZD article.
They are not talking about the death of Linux on the desktops but rather the
death of the "distribution" concept.

His logic is that nowadays, people do not care if they using RedHat, Ubuntu,
SuSE or whatever, but they care about what their desktop looks like, i.e.,
GNOME vs KDE vs XFCE vs whatever.

His analysis used Android, which is both a distribution and a desktop
environment at this point, and comparing it to the new Mozilla project and how
these two are not compatible.
His point is this, if I am using a Phone running *Linux*, whatever this Linux
is, it should not matter if I am running Android or Gecko, which is exactly
what *most* distros are at this point: It does not matter which distro you are
using, GNOME looks more or less the same, and you have approximately the same
kind of applications.

I am not saying I agree, I just wanted to clarify his POV as I understood it.

I was very upset about a ZD article, death of the Linux distro. I wrote a

Should it go on the mlug facebook page?
