I've been using fluxbox on my 'desktop' machines since the late 90s, and it's just as fast as ever. Text-based config files, you can update launching menus via a script if you add new software, and keymappings are totally configurable. Xmodmaps for spanish and french input (making use of the windows keys and menu key usefully), can run gnome and kde apps, what's not to love? If you like clicking on icons, it's probably not for you but if you want lightweight and don't want to impress your freinds with graphical whizzbangs then it's worth a shot. Stable, lots of themes if that's your thing, you can set a background image, and it's faster and more stable than any of the big ones.

This whole destop debate starts to sound a lot like the whole windows vs linux debate. And there are those who really want to consider the windows user who will want a familiar environment when they switch to linux. One of the great benefits of *ix (or *ux) was that it empowers the user to decide what to run/install. Then Ubuntu came out and everything was easier. Then it got slower and slower. And then Gnome started cutting out user options, making it 'easier' by conforming to a lowest common denominator of 'stupid'. Now there's android which is linux only by kernel, and it's not worth (IMO) debating what garbage WM is better as a standard. It's linux, there are choices, I like "a", you like "b", he likes "c". All this energy wasted on this means less time/energy spent on real work. If you support a userbase, figure out what they like, there's your .xinitrc, so you can actualy change your WM per user without changing distro... MAC/APPLE did a great disservice to the gnu/linux community by making such a popular and polished 'one UI to rule them all' interface. We've been struggling to try and find that single linux alternative ever since, forgetting about the benefits of variety.

My 2cents anyway...
Also fluxbox or die.

Also, who wants to run a javascript window manager? Seriously? This whole gnome shell thing makes my stomach upset. I'd rather waste cycles doing work, not moving windows.

I for one welcome our new gnome overlords.
