Obviously I am biased, but openSUSE Leap (42.1) is extremely solid. It's more in-line with our Enterprise distro so it's a bit more tested.

Plus, you can still use the one-click installs available from software.opensuse.org and add the packman repository for codecs and non-oss stuff.

Hmm, I moved away from Fedora to Ubuntu many years ago, because IIRC Fedora broke the automounter. Coming from Sun Solaris background, I had everything setup with automounter for home directories, and such. Recently, seems that Ubuntu? Linux? have broken the NFS delayed mount flag: _netdev? I had to patch this functionality by forcing “mount -a” at end of rc.local. Sometimes I think we are on the edge of “bit-rot” overtaking us.

Have automounter and _netdev support been fixed in Fedora? Ubuntu? yet? Otherwise, I have been reasonably happy with Ubuntu LTS (now 14.04.3) + ubuntu-desktop for years. Not as stable IMO as Solaris, but “good enough”.

I tried Cinnamon earlier today, but the sound system is still broken.
I've tried a few things to fix that issue, but nothing worked. I think
it would be easier to do a fresh install at this point. Since I've had
so many problems with either KDE or the core of Kubuntu since 15.04, I'm
not sure installing Kubuntu again would be the way to go. I've lost
faith in this distribution.
