I am too :) so I make it a point to never buy Nvidia hardware. I guess I
am lucky not to need it in any way. If I did, I would probably use
Ubuntu Gnome or Ubuntu Mate remixes which can now justify providing
support for them while being mostly consistent with other distributions
same DE experiences.

If you do have Nvidia hardware, it seems proprietary drivers are not
essential anymore to have decent performance since Debian 8 (current
stable, or "Jessie"). I am just repeating what I read here:
