Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I installed KDE Neon. This somehow restored my sound system, but it came with a few other problems. At this point, I knew I would be better off with a fresh install, so I installed Debian 8.
I love Debian for servers, but it didn't work too smoothly on my desktop. I picked Cinnamon during the install, and I ended up with a tiny graphical window on my monitor, and fonts that were near impossible to read. I added the jessie-backport and installed the nvidia drivers for my card(750ti). I was able to reboot into lightdm and see everything properly. However, Cinnamon would fail to load! I installed XFCE and that one worked. At that point, I decided to try Ubuntu 15.10 without KDE. If the desktop environment has such an impact on the sound and video, maybe my problem with Ubuntu 15.10 was just KDE. I booted Ubuntu 15.10 through USB and I was greeted with problems right away. Some of the letters were a different colour than the rest. For example, the word "/dev/sda/" would read like "/de /s a/". I aborted the installation and wondered if something was wrong with my computer. I mean, why am I having so many problems? After that, I downloaded Kubuntu 14.04LTS as I remembered how well that one worked for me. I had absolutely no problem during the install. I was able to boot into a clean installation of KDE4. Everything just works. So, for the time being, I think I will be sticking with LTS. I don't know what I'll do when I have to update away from 14.04LTS. Once the fatigue over all the problems I had lately goes away, I think I'll give a try to the other distributions suggested here, including Suse and Fedora. -- Ravnox _______________________________________________ mlug mailing list [email protected] https://listes.koumbit.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mlug-listserv.mlug.ca
