I’m “cheap”, but I don’t have patience for “bleeding edge” stuff, so I 
typically install Ubuntu LTS (14.04 now) and then install ubuntu-desktop. Works 
well enough for me.

I’ve used both rpm, apt package managers. They both work, each distro has to 
choose one or the other. For standard stuff, NP. Optional stuff can get you 
snarled up with dependencies.
