You should probably install the XCode programming package which is on
the OS X install disc if you have Leopard (and probably earlier
versions). It will install a version of gcc.

I think struggles are unavoidable in this journey :) A bit like the
"feel the burn" and "no pain no gain" slogans in gyms etc.
