I didn't follow everything you said, but I copied & pasted "ls -l /etc/
paths.d/" & got more or less exactly the same result as your post:

for the hell of it, I did what you recommended anyway, but still no
luck with latex in mnemosyne.

any chance it is a problem with my download of mnemosyne? any thoughts
as to other possible sources of error?
