Think what is happening is that you are losing TalkBack focus. You have to swipe close to the message field itself so that the focus won't shift to the next item. Also make sure you have the latest version of TalkBack running on your phone, in the latest version, the Eyes-Free team had paid some attention to the focus getting diverted every so often, and it is a lot more stable now.
