Certainly they are not mods who dress down. According to 1998's one eyed jack
(published by george marshall & friends currently out of print and changed
their format to a newspaper called: "pulped") casuals are trading in gear
new & old designers every week. as soon as new designs come out. Or as soon
as the no.1 changes his/her mind.
casuals live for football & sportsgear labels, even once for tommy hilfiger.
there is a funny book on steet cultures calles "streetstyle" by ted polhemus
with a section on casuals, mods & skins too. even suedes. There are 2 issues.
The first issue has a more accurate documentation from 1980. a picture of 8
or so young (12 years old?) boys displaying their izod sweater logos with
ultimate pride.
the issue 2 is all cartoon drawings with diagrams of what to wear & what's
been worn, separated by month & year. it documents revivals like the 1978 mod
in England wearing parkas with patches of punk bands sewn on. ??.
It's worth checking out but not buying.
There are no casuals in Portland. The hip hop, predominately black street
style are as close as you get in America (my opinion). I was just asking to
see if I am wrong. There are loads of traditional (antiracist, of course)
skins here in Portland & the Northwest. Some resemble mods one day & 1980
casuals the next. Alot don't know what they're doing with their style at all,
alot just fight.
I would avoid one to save my shoes.
I am probably the only girl mod here in Portland that doesn't try to look
like Cathy mcGowan or twiggy.
You can e-mail me if you would like me to copy the articles at kinko's and
mail them to you. I can't stand that psychedelic 1969 stuff.
I prefer '65.
cheers,
Kebrina Lott
