About 1998?

A strawman argument if ever there was one - you could equally dislike it because it's
music that's afraid to let go of a dwindling past, or because it's a plasticised
version of a dwindling past, or because you're not ignorant of the dwingling past, or
because it (often) sounds more tired than a record made 30 years ago, or because you
don't like the people who are into it or because the whole thing represents the
wholesale commercialisation of what was once the 'independent sector', or because
you're not 17 any more, or you don't particularly like pop-rock whether it's 60s or
90s, or . . .

I think the difference is that revival stuff gets shot from both sides - it was always
hated by the music critics, and it's become hated by the mod scene (who are about the
only people to talk about it these days). Wheras Britpop generally received short
shrift from the established mod scene, but - at least in the UK - made enough of a
mark to be part of pop culture history. Just consider the fate of the previous
generation - Stone Roses/Charlatans/et al - what the mod scene thought of them didn't
matter a jot.
