I tried that but got no answer, when I do ps -waux, I do see that httpd is
running-when I kill it, more processes are spawned. I did have to remove
the original apache, after installing this version.

Something's already using port 80, the default web port.
Check memory -- try "ps -ef|grep -i httpd"
If there's *any* webserver active, shut it down, then try again
(if that's an option).
