Apache-quickie-lesson.

Apache must be started by root to allow it to bind to port 80. If you
bind it to a port 1024+ then you can do it as a user. To start and
stop an apache install, you should use the script apachectl. Failing
that, a rc.d/init.d/httpd or /etc/init.d/httpd script will work. Ie.
type: "apachectl stop" or "./httpd stop". If absolutely necessary,
kill the oldest apache process, if it's bound to port 80, it'll be
the one run by root.

If you use jserv, you'll need to pay attention to the servlet engine
too.

Cheers,
Craig Skelton

Strange, I see http alive even when I have stopped it. How can I
prevent the
httpd from starting?

Try a netstat -a to see if you've got something running at port80
before starting the server.
