mod_ssl apache w/o -DSSL

I'm trying to figure out how to compile apache+mod_ssl so I do not have
to specify -DSSL on the command line and still get an ssl aware apache.
I can't seem to find any documentation on this, and I'm wondering how
this is done?  Mainly this is to figure out how a current apache+mod_ssl
was built and what non-standard stuff was done to it.
