That's a good point.  The incompatibility between perl and version.pm on 
handling e.g. v1.2.3_4 is trouble though (and I would guess that it is 
permanent.)

But perhaps some sort of TRIAL marker (rather than a convention in the 
version number) would be clearer anyway?
