Modusmail/Vopmail do something with regards to multiple cpu's as we found an
early bug back in vopmail when we installed our quad xeon box. The vopmail
services just wouldn't run until we got patched services. That said, I think
you are correct in that the services appear to be tied to a processor, but
then again I'm not sure. When our server is under load all of the cpu's tend
to spike up together, though at slightly different times and for different
durations. It may be that this is due to moduscan, modusadm, and smtprs are
all busy dealing with the load, but I would expect the smtprs spike to be
less of an issue than the scanning process. Not a big deal though as the
mail still gets through.

Subject: [Modus] hyper threading on Windows 2003

I don't think Hyper Threading will affect Modus Mail in any way, however
you should be aware that Modus Mail is not written to take advantage of
multiple processors. Each Modus Mail service will utilize a single
processor and affinities can be set so that the services are bound to a
specific process.
Hyper Threading in essence presents a single CPU as multiple CPU's to
the operating system and hence should not affect Modus Mail or any other
application. The Hyper Threading drivers should allow Modus Mail to
function as though it is using multiple CPU's and hence in turn improve
overall performance.
If you do install Modus Mail with Hyper Threading turned on I would be
interested in knowing what you see for Page Faults in the ModusADM and
ModusSCAN services as I believe this may increase. Page Faults do not
indicate any problems with the software and it will function perfectly
fine, however they do indicate a possible performance bottleneck in that
the system expects to find something in memory that is no longer there
(there is a lot more to page faults than this, but I wanted to keep
things simple).

We plan to install a new dell poweredge server
for modusmail. We plan to use Windows 2003 as OS.
Should we enable hyper threading or not?
Are there any known issues with hyper threading
and modusmail?
