The oblong sponge filters in mine had disintegrated after 18 years. Keith at 
the agents BHM recommended the filters used in aquariums. The spongy pieces, 
which have large open mesh, are slightly larger than the originals filters but 
there is room to put them in without cutting them.
Available in pet shops, cost about £4. I put them in about six months ago and 
they seems to work well.
