I understand your concern. The problem is really that it already *is* abandonware in a sense. This is far from the first time we've had this discussion, and it's been a very long time since anyone on the core team used or cared about CGI. Nobody else has stepped up to maintain it either. The test suite might prevent trivial breakage, but nothing more; and all indications are that nobody will have both the motivation and expertise to fix any non-trivial problem that comes up in future.
