Okay, I got an email from Grey Smith who assures me it couldn't have
gone down the way I described, I've read Sean's email describing the
fees so I have come up with a formula that seems to work.
here we go
first we have "Stupid bidder A"
"Stupid bidder A" sees Heritage auctions on eBay and sees that a
number of items are still at $1 staring price. So he decides he
wouldn't mind bidding on a lot of them. However, "Stupid bidder A"
fails to read the auction to the end & does not read the section on
fees & charges. Hence why we call him "Stupid bidder A"
He successfully bids on & wins 30 items totalling $85 in sales. These
poster must have been a pretty good bargain!
"Oh joy" says "Stupid bidder A".
"I just won a crap load of stuff for nothing.. I'm going to have so much fun"
:-)
but then he gets the bill, which he does not expect because as
"Stupid bidder A" he didn't read the fees part, so he didn't know he
was going to have to pay $9 per auction, or maybe he did read the
fees section, but because he is "Stupid bidder A" he didn't realize
it was $9 per item & thought it would be $9 total for all the items.
se we have $85 + $9 x30= $270 = $355
already we're getting pretty close.
Add 8% sales tax $28.40 = $383.40
shipping maybe $20 ..... that makes it over $400.. but I tell ya,
regardless of the total bill in that case he still must have gotten a
pretty friggin good deal.
Keep in mind folks, as Grey pointed out to me, I did not hear this
story directly from the "alleged" bidder and as such, until I do or
until more info comes from the main sources, then it would be just hearsay.

I would certainly like to hear more details of what exactly this guy bought.
Heritage's buyer's premium is laid out in their auctions both on their site
and ebay's.
If he bought 15 items, that is a premium of $135, added to his $85 bid price
you get a total of $220. 8% sales tax ($17.60)now brings it just under
$250.
So this person had to pay $150 shipping for 15 items?
Looking at Heritage's shipping table the MOST expensive shipping is for full
comic boxes at $12 per first item and $5.00 per additional (and these are
boxes that weigh 40lbs each, so the price is pretty reasonable).
The most shipping I can see is $5 x 14 items + $12 = $84 or about half of
what this guy says he was charged. (Unless he bought an item that had to be
shipped by freight and was charged exact shipping).
Even still looking over the upcoming poster auction, I would probably
consider it a bargain to get the 15 cheapest items for $220 before shipping.
That works out to under $15 a poster, if you can find even 10 posters that
don't realistically have a market value of $100+ in this auction I'd like to
hear what they are.

Subject: Re: [MOPO] Heritage tutorial for Auction
wait folks how about this
Heritage's auctions on ebay.
Bruce will be running an email from a customer who saw a bunch of
items that were still under $10 on ebay
he bought a certain number of them - about 15 items.. that totalled $85
well in addition to the bids, Heritage states that the minimum buyers
premium was $9 per item, which was more than any of the item's hammer
prices were. Then in addition there were shipping fees & because the
guy was in Texas, he also had to pay sales taxes.. the result?
his total bill for $85 in auction items was OVER $400.
how's that folks!
