Jacob Javitts center sometime in 1980s... so im in my tradeshow booth
doing the National Stationary Show
where Buyers from world over attend... and was showing my nifty Movie
memorabilia kiosk that showcased Movie memorbilia of all kinds and movie
poster reproductions..
Along comes Roger Richman who was the person that handle Gables estate
and Marilyn Monroe
( marilyn is now handled by Cutis lisenseing out of Indianapolis, Ind)
anyways... so Roger starts
questioning my posters and says well we have the rights to this... and
its not official lisenced, OK
so then all of a sudden a person From MGM studios Lisenceing stops in my
booth as Roger is there
and says we OWN the Gable photos From GWTW... so Rogers says OHHH no
we own the Rights to Gables likeness.
So now they are argueing over how owns what and continued until they
finally both left my booth....
neither one ever got back to me.... Most of the studios have no idea
who owns what as they have sold off librarys like musical chairs..
Remember when Warner bros, re-released Wizard of OZ with the WB LOGO???
i I about choaked on my popcorn!! As the Lion roar was my memory since
a kid..
Its Funny as Ita a wonderful Life - was owned bt repulic pictures who
again was distributed by wb
anyways..... , it appears.. Sumner Redstone, owns most of Hollywood
these days...
To litigate over a repo of a post 30s Movie that didnt have re-newed
copyright is so costly
and the Poster printers are not in USA so serving them is tough and
the best they can attempt is ceace
and desist nasty atty letters...
So thats why many of these posters appear... the studios can take a
large retailer on with all there titles.
and have been successfull in that way. Just as the websites needed to
stop selling recorded materials
there was a Guy I knew when I was a OFFICIAL federation of Musicians
Union agent. in 1976 . of Cleveland named Al Serafini
he was B.M.I. ( Broadcast Music Inc) agent and enforced nightclubc and
jukboxes.. he would come to Toledo and shake down cluowners for royaltys..
I admired his strong-arm approach to get Royalties.. those were the
days.,, Now I bet its all done by computer
Sorry all thos stuff Cracks me up as its show biz st its core.... show
me a entertainer and you will hear gripes about contracts and not
getting paid...
so why should posters be any differant....... Just remember if You Find
a Oscar® by the road...
Pick it up and Run to the nearest fed ex and ship it back or the
Academy will tar and feather you in Macys window at high noon!
