I have a couple of the S2 art group posters which I won through the years at Cinevent. The quality of these posters are outstanding. Last Cinevent I ran across an old friend who told me that all he buys are the S2's, he said he didn't want to get into originals, because he didn't know anything about them and didn't want to pay the big bucks they demand. That's okay, he's still buying quality and knows he is not being taken. S2 poster clearly marked and would be extremely hard to alter.
Most dealers, if not all on MOPO would not sell or deceive the public by selling copies, repros, or recreations as originals. If they did and were found out...well it wouldn't help their creditability as a dealer. But as we know there are dealers out there selling repros everyday to people who just do not know better. I got taken by one of them on a Raiders of the Lost Ark and a Empire Strikes Back inserts...about $100. each...before I knew about the mint white ones. I'm sure that dealer which just about everyone would know, was laughing all the way to the bank. Almost every month we see repros selling on Ebay as originals and as collectors we are not allowed to do anything about it with out the risk of being kicked off. As a Snow White collector I see the collector set of 6 Snow White lobby cards being offered as originals all the time. One time a seller had a picture of a repro on one auction listing and original on another at the same time. Both cards was Snow White running through the woods and both listed as 37' Snow White cards. I of course bid on the original card, I won and of course it was a repro. Luck with me, I wasn't out to much! I'm starting to see a lot of Day the Earth Stood Still lobby repros also. To be honest, I'm not bidding on to many of DTESS lobbies these days unless I know of the seller. I just don't want to take that chance. I still have a problem with copies, but if as long as they are the 11x 17's or the commercial posters 24 x 36 of 1sh's...well??? But when the lobbies, inserts, or any other poster are being reproduced to the correct size they should not be accepted. I can only think this is opening up the door for deception. One reason that the S2 Art Group posters will never be mistaken as original by anyone with a bit of knowledge is that they are BETTER than the originals. They are created on a heavy duty archival paper, with better inks than were originally used. They also take a bit of liberty, and recreate photo off-set printed posters (like TOOTSIE) using the stone lithography process. They also carry an embossed identification stamp on the bottom edge.
