I guess this is supposed to be my cue to enter the conversation. So... Yes!! The market is collapsing at an exponentially expanding rate. If you have any premium sci-fi/horror material I suggest you call me now and I will be happy to take it off your hands before the decline causes you irreparable harm and you are shunned by your loved ones.
But seriously, Not sure how you can say there were a dozen unbelievable prices along with a bunch of better results and then state that the genre sure looks puny. To me it looked as if prices were strong across the board and anything that looked puny could most likely be chalked up to being in lesser condition (movie posters is still the only hobby I know of that has a paper-thin spread on the values between the lowest condition pieces and the highest condition ones. Thankfully that spread is growing as people realize how hard it is to find truly high grade untouched pieces). Some of the amazing prices from this auction include: Attack of the 50ft Woman 3-sheet - record price, Day of the Triffids quad - record price, Earth vs Flying Saucers lobby - record price, Destroy all Monsters lobbies - very strong considering Bruce sold the same cards 3 months ago for 1/5 of that price, Caligari lobby - record price Forbidden Planet insert - record price (and I know of one sheets that haven't brought this much) Man who Laughs half sheet - record price Mystery of Wax Museum title card - record price Invisible Man Returns insert - record price Invisible Man 'dead card" - record price Bride of Frankenstein half sheet - record price King Kong 42 Half Sheet - record price Invasion of the Saucer-men lobbies - record price War of the Worlds one sheet - record price Creature From the Black Lagoon one sheet - record price Black Cat half sheet - record price and nearly triple the previous time it sold at auction Werewolf of London insert - record price Piece of a Wolf Man lobby card - record price And some of the puny prices include... Well, I'm not exactly sure what they include, but some pieces that were under or at the low part of the estimate are: Beginning of the End one-sheet (one that had tape on the borders and color touch) Day the Earth Stood Still one sheet - still over 11K, so hard to think of that as puny. Godzilla one sheet - $100 below low estimate Incredible Shrinking Man half sheet - ?? don't know why, though I personally don't find it very attractive given how cool some of the other paper is. Invaders From Mars half sheet - sold for about 70% of low estimate, but in line with the last one Bruce sold and other noted sales. Possibly an aggressive estimate And....??? I just don't see it. There were record prices for items from the teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s - so where is this slow decline? $2 Million+ dollars is an incredible amount for the market to absorb in one auction, and not only did it do so, it appears that almost nothing slipped between the cracks and that bidders actually came from everywhere to drive sci-fi/horror to record levels across all decades. -----Original Message----- From: MoPo List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2007 6:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] What's with horror/sci-fi prices? I SAID there "were around a dozen unbelievable knock-your-socks-off high prices, and also a bunch of "better" results", but look across the board at the horror/sci-fi, and the picture is not nearly so rosy! I imagine some great statistician (Sean?) could come up with a list of better/lesser results. I got the clear impression that there was substantial weakness.
