in response to dario, and consistent with my prior MOPO posting, i am not
against linen posters that are merely placed on linen, per se.........  but i
hate posters that have turned into an oil painting and dealers who lie about
pre-backing condition.

chunks of added paper????  give me a break!!!!

i have sveral one sheets on linen that had no restoration, but just placed on
linen.  that's fine.  if there is a chip or a seam issue, why fill it in?

my main point was that one should not be scammed on ebay into believing that
the pre-condition was, necessaily, mint just because the seller said so.  i
have returned several oil paintings through the years!   and, i have received 3
emails on this subject today from "shy" MOPO members telling me how they have
been scammed with linen items.

i do not buy linen pieces unless i know the seller.  and i do not buy from
sellers who have tiny ebay pics, and tell me they dont have access to a camera
to send larger pictures.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE SHOULD SEEK HONESTY & DISCLOURE.  Restoration
affords an opportunity to scam.  Buying a poster on ebay requires caution.
Buyer a linen piece in person is a different story.  And I am sure that those
$100,000++++ posters to which you referred were examined closely by the buyer
and acquired through an ebay snipe.  My advice was targeted for ebay users.
And i am sure that you won't disagree with that.

i thank you for your opinion, and, perhaps, we are not so opposite in our
thoughts.

Hi Michael,

I am sorry to hear about your experience with the LB poster that did not meet
up to the dealers grading.

I can honestly say( maybe because I have a trained eye ) I have never seen a
restored poster with undetectable repairs, and I've seen restorations from the
average restorer to what is considered by many to be the best in the business.
all repairs are visible from up close, angles or through light, as you describe
in your auction. So for me this business about undetectable is BS.

I must say, you sound a bit frantic about Linen backing in your listing, but I
value your opinion. You also say <<< REMEMBER MY SUGGESTION:  Buy this poster
at the cheap opening price and frame it as is. >>>

Clearly to me, Gentleman's Agreement would look better and fetch more money if
restored. I also disagree with your suggestion " Leave as is" all that tape on
the back will destroy the poster, as is evident already in the upper
center. That is a beautiful poster, but it needs help. I can see you already
tried with some archival Tape ;-)

As temporary caretakers it is our responsibilities to take good care of our
posters, so future generations can enjoy them. Conservation, Restoration and
Storage solutions, what ever is necessary, it must be done.

It's funny that the most expensive posters in the world are all linen backed,
Metropolis, Mummy, Dracula and so on.

Best of luck with you auctions and Happy New Year!!

dario.

Well,

I have virtually every single-sided poster linen backed.  I feel it improves
the presentation and preservation.

If a poster was Mint before backing, I actually lower the grade to Near-Mint
after backing because I don’t feel it’s fair to call a poster Mint if it has
had anything done to it.  Having said that, I believe that my Mint copy of Gone
With the Wind, Style CF is just as valuable as Near Mint linen backed as it was
Mint unbacked.

I also believe that Fine posters that are linen backed and look Very Fine or
Near Mint are more valuable.

i have been getting many positve comments about my description of one of my
posters on ebay.

look at the description, just to see my discussion on linen-backing.

presently, there are 9 ebay watchers, although i suspect it might sell for the
for the low to mid $200s---which would be an outright steal.
