I have had a great many posters in my collection and inventory linen backed
often simply because I believe that the overall appearance is enhanced by
backing. This sometimes means that they are easier to frame and look much more
impressive irrespective of any restoration that may or may not be required. One
of my customers has had his entire collection of over 500 posters backed and he
displays most of them with magnets in his home rotating them every so often.
The majority of posters in his collection were in fine condition prior to
backing.

I have also often said that large Italian posters are so fragile that they are
far better off being backed than left in drawers where every time they are
handled you worry about damaging the poster.

I'm not saying that everyone should linen back every poster that they have but
I do think that the linen backing process has been a wonderful asset to the
hobby. Someone compared posters to fine art. The fact is that restoration
exists in many forms of art. Some of the greatest works of art have had
extensive restoration and this only enhances their value and appearance.

I do feel that restoration should be handled sensitively with the "less is best
approach" but if you can get rid of ugly brown tape marks or stains it surely
makes sense to do that.

Happy New Year to all from a very wet and windswept Gold Coast
John
