all studios had still photographers on set taking pictures continuously, as well as posed shots between takes. then the production or publicity department would choose which stills to issue or use as keybook stills.

the most I know of for one film are in the 150 diff images range

production department folk would then select a certain number for use on lobby cards & still packs.

clearly.. some production guys had no artistic eye which is why we see lobby card sets occasionally with few or even no useful images, aka dead cards

are scene/lobby card photographs merely a FRAME from the film, or did the actors pose specifically for a still photograph?

pretty amazing that some cards depict the essence or mood of the film, while others are so uninspiring.

the famous scene card (also on the insert) of Marilyn in ALL ABOUT EVE is not special..........but, boy, did the studio get lucky in retrospect. clearly......some decisions were guesswork or being lucky in making the decisions.
