> I absolutely hate dealers that do that. Speaking of dealers doing some pretty odd things... This just happened to me recently: A big poster dealer (one who runs major auctions, so not some newbie) had a poster on eBay I wanted. He had several dozen copies in a buy-it-now auction. I emailed him and asked if he really had that many, all in that good shape (all were supposedly NM+, for a poster that's almost 40 years old), and I asked how much he would want if I were to purchase ALL several dozen copies. I was expecting (and prepared) to pay around half price, perhaps even less, since I was willing to buy so many (and this is a poster that is not highly desirable and not valuable at all - the auction had been listed before several times and not a single copy sold, and not a single copy sold during this 10 day auction either). Then I got the dealer's reply (and, this is a dealer I had purchased thousands of dollars of inventory off of in the one previous transaction I had with them): 'I think full-price for the whole lot is fair.' What a great deal! I get to pay the exact same price as I could get at eBay right now at the buy-it-now, even though I'm buying IN BULK - and the dealer gets to save 5 or 10% in eBay fees (and he doesn't have to package and ship several dozen different packages over the next ten years). That's like a negative 10% discount on a bulk order - gee, thanks! I'll be doing a lot of business with you in the future!... That isn't the first time a poster dealer's pulled this crap with me either. The very previous time I tried to make a similar bulk offer, I got the exact same response...
This isn't unusual either. The last 10 or 20 times I've made a movie-poster-seller an offer on eBay (or Mopo), I made a very fair offer, only to get turned down (turned down as if I had just raped their mothers in front of them) - only to watch the sellers relist the items numerous times. Every single one eventually sold for far less than my original offer. Then of course comes the fun part. Before they sell them, they usually come crawling back to me asking if my offer is still good, but of course, by that time, there's no chance in hell I'd offer them the same price again (if only to teach them a lesson)... And, out of those 10 or 20 items, I ended up winning the relisted item for far less than my offer several times... I've mentioned before a good rule of thumb I use when people ask my opinion about the price of something, is what would that same dealer offer to buy it at if you had one for sale. If it's a solid piece and a reputable dealer the answer really should be somewhere in the 50% or more range. I know I'm happy to pay a bigger percentage than that on some of David's least favorite titles (sci-fi/horror) and on exceptional pieces from classic cinema. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: MoPo List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Kusumoto Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 7:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] Auction price/value Or how about this. Try to buy a title from "certain" dealers and he or she will say it sold for $500 in auction so don't even TRY to haggle. Now try to sell the same title to "certain" dealers, asking 50% of retail -- and he or she will tell you they can procure it "for around $50 or less" from eBay -- making you feel your asking price is stupid. Then they procure that same title elsewhere and mark it up to $400-500! Whatever they can get, fine, but I hate when this happens. Asking $150-200 for something a dealer plans to mark up to $500 is OK I guess, but what a double standard. -d. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 19:01:34 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Auction price/value To: [email protected] From: MoPo List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson That is one thing that is ALWAYS true. Try to BUY an item from a dealer, and he will tell you it just sold at auction for $1,195. But try to SELL that same item to that same dealer, and he will tell you it just sold at auction for $1,000! Close - buy from a dealer and he will tell you the $1195 price, sell to a dealer and he will mention that the consignor just sold his for $850 Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___________________________________________________________________ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content.
