Hi Jeff, When no claim has been paid, they do, if they can read the label. I worked for UPS when they first came to Louisiana in the early 1970s. Let some of the labels get wet and you have a disaster. Now, with bar codes it is more difficult. but there is still a lot of things to go wrong. Some packages could be shipped to the wrong zip code, or the label torn off in handling or water smear the address and make it unreadable. THOSE were not sent to the insurance division but to an equivalent of the dead letter office waiting to be claimed. They would try to match those up to either get to the addressee or returned to the shipper.
But once an insurance CLAIM had been PAID, then that package was property of the insurance department. Why would they send that back??? THEN they would be out the money AND the package. Several of their "auctions" included items that at some point were in a "missing" package mailed to Steve Fishler. We told him about this and he, or course, contacted the U.S.P.S. but not with as much luck as Dominique. I always thought that mailing posters is safe of such "mishaps", because only a true collector will know the real value of contents, but I guess I was wrong. It was a strong tube of 5 feet long. The buyer received a shoe box containing rolls of paper towels .... After 2 proceedings, UPS was forced to pay me 38.000 Euros. Yesterday the 8 posters were sold at Christie's South Kensington (Lots 166, 169, 170, 174, 177, 178, 179 and 180). Being an honest person, I informed UPS of the sale, and they lodged a complaint for stealing against Christies. Today, I've learned who the consignor of these posters was.... And the winner is ..........................U P S Yes, incredible but true, your eyes don't lie. I just spoke with the french police agent who interviewed me, and she told me that the seller is a UPS subsidiary ..... As soon as I can get more info, I'll keep you informed.
