As a professional musician...and let me hasten to say that makes me an expert on absolutely NOTHING, except movie posters... I am not envious of Lambert. (I am very envious of the dough he'll be making, however!) From what I've heard of him...and I listened to more stuff to become more educated, by the way...his marvelous pipes are being used to commit what my ears hear as musical felonies. As far as being homophobic,...let's see, I watched "Brokeback Mountain" in a theater full of gay guys in SAN FRANCISCO (with my wife, I might add, the only person with ovaries in the theater), I'm not afraid to wear a fanny pack in public, and, oh yeah, I have a remarkably eclectic group of friends who I dearly love that includes various homosexual folk, straight people (both liberal AND conservative), cross-dressers, my best friend, and other assorted weirdos, so I don't think THAT'S it. That being said, I honest-to-God kept waiting for Lambert to burst into flame at any second. I'm sorry, the dude makes Liberace look like Clint Eastwood in "The Unforgiven". Finally, Judith, how can you say "Why are all the gorgeous men gay?" What about Ernest Borgnine? Seriously, though, Judith, it's just a case of differing tastes. While I freely admit to a bias against all things "American Idol", Lambert made me especially mental. I applaud your admiration and lust for the young lad and wish him well, as long as he stays off my television.

him.

There's another aspect to this: Adam and his manager, etc., were thrilled
he didn't win top spot. Now he's not obligated to Amer. Idol for the next 2
years to do ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the new A&P in Podunk, Iowa, etc.
He'll be on Broadway very soon. He's a first-class performer, an artist
(many of the arrangements were his, others were Ricky Miner's), and a
powerful set of pipes. Oh, and did I mention that he is a gorgeous
HUNK??!!?!?!?!

Are you guys out there who dislike him envious or merely homophobic? Judith

Hi Zeev,
I rarely watch "American Idol", but I did happen to see Adam Lambert do
"Ring of Fire". My take was that the guy has a superb set of pipes, but
he ruined...no, make that nuked... a wonderful song with his
over-the-top vocal histrionics. I hated his arrangement (as I noted here
before, my wife asked me, "What did you think of that?" I replied, "It
was...well, flaming.") but it's impossible to ignore the guy's vocal
chops. I think that show has put so much emphasis on that Mariah
Carey-like, "Hey watch what I can do!" over-singing that these kids end
up masturbating all over the song to impress those four mean-spirited
nitwits. There's simply no art in it. As a guitarist, I value economy in
my playing, the right note at the right time. I rarely see that on A.I.
As I said, that's the ONLY song I saw him sing, so my overview of the
lad's talent is pretty myopic.
As to why he lost...Lambert's absolutely as gay as a handbag full of
rainbows, despite his coyness in the press. As Proposition 8 in
California (and Miss California herself!) revealed, many people are not
comfortable with that sexual orientation, especially when it is
expressed with such flamboyance in their living rooms. From what I'd
heard from fans of the show, I thought the guy was a shoe-in for the top
spot, but I think people underestimated this nation's capacity for
pettiness and narrow-minded thinking. I do think that Lambert is a smart
guy who will parlay all the hoopla into a decent career.
Thank you, Zeev, for asking, and I'm going to go tell my wife that
someone referred to me as a "maven" about something other than American
International posters from the Fifties!!!

I'm interested in your take as to the merits of Adam Lambert (American

final vote.

And into the fray steps G.D.....
Carrie Underwood has a fantastic voice, but I would rather give oral
pleasure to Oprah Winfrey than listen to Modern Pop Country, which,
as a genre of music, makes me break out in itchy, pus-spewing hives.
Underwood has a first-class set of pipes but is using them to sing,
in THIS man's opinion, crap music. Shame on her. Give me Billy Joe
Shaver or Kasey Chambers for country with balls (or in Chambers'
case, ovaries. Her "Barricades and Brick Walls" tune makes me think
about every psychotic ex-girlfriend I ever dated.).
Kellie Clarkson is nowhere near the singer that Underwood is, she's
gotten fat and weird, but I love her early, dumb teen rock singles.
It's crap, but to moi, it's GREAT crap. It makes me act like Tom
Cruise dancing around in his underwear in "Risky Business" (I know,
TMI!). It's pure junk, but it's junk that moves me, kind of like the
musical equivalent of an Ed Wood film.
Susan Boyle? I hope she makes a lot of money, very quickly. She'll
need it to pay for that prolonged stay in the mental institution
she's destined for after dealing with the music business for a couple
of years. Give me a call, Susie-sweetie-baby-cookie. We need to talk.
In the end, arguing about music with somebody is like trying to teach
a pig to dance; it's frustrating for you, and it's annoying to the
pig. That being said, I still love to do it, and I will be hurt and
confused for weeks if Rich doesn't send me a personal e-mail with the
subject "Kellie Clarkson Stinks!"
Back to movies...I saw "Up!" yesterday, and it's not just another
home run for Pixar, it's a grand slam. Funny, moving, and there are
lots of visual references to other films and pop images, the most
obvious being the "King Kong" Empire State Building scene and the
classic painting you see everywhere of dogs playing poker. I can't
imagine anyone but the most curmudgeonly, fault-finding naysayer not
liking this one.

hi judith,

Regardless of rich's opinions on who the most listen to and who
stinks.. one has to remember, this is only one guy's opinion, is
not founded in fact, and would mean little to anyone who enjoys any
of the artists he commented on.

Underwood is primarily a country artist... and there are MANY who
do not listen to this kind of music (just there are many that dont
listen to pop, rap, jazz, classical etc).

kelly clarkson, in my opinion, has a voice perfectly suited to the
type of music she sings and does not stink. she's had many hits on
the soft rock and pop charts and has a vibrant charisma (as does
Underwood).

Clarkson? The joke is on anybody who thinks this is real
talent and (insert favourite deity/celebrity here) help us
if the Martians invade and hold these examples up as

Please, dear world, avert your gaze from these shows and
invest your time and money supporting actually talented
singers and songwriters rather than glitzed-up amateurs
doing poorly executed covers of songs by, often, talented
and forgotten people. Disregard the outcomes and the
fickle fancies and support people who are worth investing
in and need it badly at this time in the music industry.
There is a ton of talent out there but you have to dig a
bit and realize that it is not going to get to you as
easily as your cable set-up and exposure on today's
commercial radio is also pathetic and near nil for great
talent and congested with crap, just like the current
        cinema climate.

If you must meet me halfway, go with the new Camera Obscura
album as they're Scottish and fantastic. I am available as

I thought she was extremely gracious when the

Boyle conducted herself really nicely during
losing? I liked how she handled herself
before, during and after her last
performance, and when they announced the
winner. It was almost as though someone had
coached her in exactly what to say and do.
And the winners left me cold. They remind
me
of those guys (Stomp?) who make music with
