*Hello Simon and Wim,
Good point Simon. I know there is a small risk but please remember that
there is a number on the back of the poster that correspond with the
Certificate, so they must have the certificate as well.
But who knows if they really wanted to, they'll find a way around that
to, Bastards.
End of the day I will continue to provide such service to anyone that
asks for it and I hope that no one will play a dirty trick on me.
A lot of talk of restoration work.
My philosophy has always been "Less is more" I leave small blemishes,
stamps, NSS bleeds and odd pinhole and so on.
What constitute a good restoration in my mind. I believe that
restoration should be visible up on close inspection, but as soon as you
step away to normal viewing distance (5-6 feet) The restoration should
gracefully fade away and the poster should look good looking at.
Naturally this is not for everyone, so I have been told. But I do have a
small loyal group of collectors that like it just like that. So that is
what we try to strive for.
I don't do massive photo copies of art work and mayor missing sections
and incorporate them in to the poster. I decline work like that, it is
to easy and a little bit of cheating if you ask me. However I do
sometimes use a copy of really small detail like GAU logo or tiny tiny
NSS disclaimer texts and so on and work it in.
Best,
dario.

If I was a linen backer/restorer I would not want to sign my work on
the back, one reason only: my signature could be forged and used on
fake material to signify the work had been done ethically. What would
happen if someone like Dario's signature was used to endorse a fake
piece of work? Maybe as we have seen on here the shouting and accusing
would begin straight away.

This discussion comes up every few years and after all the ranting
and raving nothing gets done. Case in point -- this discussion
occurred right here on MOPO in March of 2005. Here's the link to
the discussion. It even mentions the infamous Frankenstein half
sheet which apparently spurred this particular discussion.

And yet, nothing has been done.

So why isn't there a hobby standard at this point?

Dario already does something like this, since I asked him for
it. Next to a stamp of vintagemovieart and the date on the
back, he will provide a record of the works that have been
restored and the date.

I've been saying this for a long time. So has Ed and Sue
Poole at Learnaboutmovieposters.com. You know when you
receive a linenbacked poster from a Heritage auction and
there is a clear label on the back of it? Well, assuming you
can get a acid free clear label, I think that would be great
and it could remain on the poster forever for provenance.

glenn,
i was right with you on this... whether it was signed, or a
certificate was issued and signed by the restorer, stating
what work and repairs were done, restore, paper repalcement
or fills, etc. . this document, like an appraisal, would go
with the piece, were it ever sold, like one includes when
selling a work of fine art.
i do recall you had a number of silly replies in the
negative. one dealer even talked of the difficulty of SEWING
on a tag to the linen.. who ever talked about that kind of
method?
i still think this is a sound and logical idea. makes total
sense.

If anyone would care to re-read it....
It seemed to me most people were against the idea...
Not that I'm a genius or anything but it's interesting to
see what a difference 2 months can make...

What are the pros and cons of restorers signing
their work?
Would it add or subtract from the value of a piece?
It would be easier to do with paper items, a
simple rubber stamp of some kind. I suppose it
could be done the same on linen.
Years go by and you wonder, who did the work on
this piece.
Your thoughts?
