Because up until now, no one has demanded it. It should be an industry
standard where all the names of whoever worked on the poster are included and
signed by the owner of the company. I would go even one step further on items
over $50,000, let's say, that the document be notarized. Notarys are fairly
common in most towns and citites. All people who worked on the poster should
be included in case there is ever any future problem. In the case of the "fake"
lobby cards and posters, if names had been available, those people would be
subject to scrutiny. Just because your boss tells you to "create" a fake poster
doesn't mean you have to follow orders.

I know people that quit Joe Hernandez because they didn't want to be a
part of fraud and theft. One employee of his actually called the customer and
that is what got the lawsuit ball rolling in that case. Aren't any of you
wondering now if any of your posters are "recreations"? I have seen skilled
restorers restore and "recreate" part of a poster that was missing. What's to
say they didn't recreate the whole poster when they sent it back to me? My only
saving grace is that I know Sylvia at Precision would never do that. So, I just
have to think about the items I had restorered before that point. Since most of
them weren't worth a ton of money, I'm not that concerned, but that could be
false hope!

So why isn't there a hobby standard at this point?

Dario already does something like this, since I asked him for it. Next to a
stamp of vintagemovieart and the date on the back, he will provide a record of
the works that have been restored and the date.

I've been saying this for a long time. So has Ed and Sue Poole at
Learnaboutmovieposters.com. You know when you receive a linenbacked poster
from a Heritage auction and there is a clear label on the back of it? Well,
assuming you can get a acid free clear label, I think that would be great and
it could remain on the poster forever for provenance.

glenn,

i was right with you on this... whether it was signed, or a certificate was
issued and signed by the restorer, stating what work and repairs were done,
restore, paper repalcement or fills, etc. . this document, like an appraisal,
would go with the piece, were it ever sold, like one includes when selling a
work of fine art.

i do recall you had a number of silly replies in the negative. one dealer even
talked of the difficulty of SEWING on a tag to the linen.. who ever talked
about that kind of method?

i still think this is a sound and logical idea. makes total sense.

What are the pros and cons of restorers signing their work?

Would it add or subtract from the value of a piece?

It would be easier to do with paper items, a simple rubber stamp of some kind.
I suppose it could be done the same on linen.

Years go by and you wonder, who did the work on this piece.

Your thoughts?
