Hi Diane That all makes good sense and I wouldn't want to put anyone off having posters linen backed. I think the problem is that in recent times some restorers have stretched the boundaries in the interests of satisfying the customer. Sometimes when the percentage of restoration becomes more than the original content then you have to wonder whether a poster can still actually be described as original.
I noticed that Bruce auctioned off some linen backed posters recently and he described them (from memory) as having been backed in the "European way" ie very little restoration. A friend recently had a poster backed simply because it had become very fragile and difficult to handle. He specifically asked for no restoration and I think the end result looks quite acceptable. http://www.johnreid.helpinghost.com/KANSANFRENCH.jpg Regards John Sign up for my regular newsletter on movie memorabilia: http://www.moviemem.com/pages/page.php?mod=account&go=register Visit my Website: www.moviemem.com All About Australian posters: http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/johnwr_W0QQuqtZg My eBay Store and Lisitngs: http://myworld.ebay.com/johnwr/ Exhibitions: http://www.moviemem.com/pages/page.php?page=15 JOHN REID VINTAGE MOVIE MEMORABILIA PO Box 92 Palm Beach Qld 4221 Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: Diane Jeffrey To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, September 27, 2009 10:52 AM Subject: [MOPO] Profiles in History...question John - I totally see where you are coming from. I always tell my clients the process, so they have a full understanding of what we are going to do. Ultimately, they make the decision to go forward. This process takes a great amount of work for such a small piece. I hear you on the standards, it would be great, and something to work for. The problem is, each piece can be so different, so it might be a difficult thing to do. Restorers, I am sure, have had to tweak their processes from time to time, in order to avoid a problem, after getting into a project. For right now, my advise would be to talk with your restorer, to make sure you fully understand what will be happening to your piece. You have the right to say no to any recommendation given for your poster.
