AOL EmailZeev,
It's not just David who's trying to make it clear that there are such a thing
as bootleg inserts.
It's probably many people here on MOPO who are wondering why we are beating our
heads against the wall.. again.

Re-reading Tom's post, I think there is a basic misunderstanding of the
terminology. "Minty white inserts" SPECIFICALLY relates to the
bootleg/fake/bogus/unlicensed (take your pick or any combination) that were
deliberately created to sell as original inserts into the collector's market.

They were wholesaled internationally in vast numbers and many were picked up by
dealers both knowingly and unknowingly and they have been fed into the
collector's market over several years and are still circulating if not bing
actively produced.

The same can be said of numerous lobby card sets for such films as JAWS, TAXI
DRIVER, CHINATOWN, RAGING BULL, etc, etc.

They are a total pain in the arse for all sellers of real material because so
many red flags are held over the titles that for legit sellers to sell what
any of these titles in lobbies and inserts is really worth is now sullied by
the bootleg market.

Just like the bogus one sheet market. In the 80s, a couple of US dealers were
supplying a German outfit with original rolled one sheets which were then mass
produced and re-sold back into the international poster market, via comic book
stores and poster shops, including legit original movie memorabilia dealers who
were either less knowledgable on their materials, or happy to turn a blind eye
in the name of profit.

The STAR WARS "hairy belt" were produced and sold via comics wholesalers and to
collectors stores on an international level - and there are many thousands out
there in the collectors market.

Tom's post seems to indicate he thinks and uses the term "minty white inserts"
to describe ANY 80s posters of this format that are uncirculated and remain in
near perfect condition.

I'll agree with Fred Sliman that MANHATTAN has always been a steady seller,
steadily appreciating in value, (along with ANNIE HALL) and that the other
titles he names in the bootleg insert list are also increasingly desired by
collectors when they know they are getting the real deal and not a fake.

Phil

David, you say one thing, Tom another. You obviously haven't convinced Tom.
Maybe others as well.

How many times do we have to discuss this same topic? You tell me.

This afternoon Tom posted his thoughts on the Provenance thread, and by the
way, also stated that in his opinion the "minty white"' inserts are legit, and
all this talk of them being fakes is nothing but "propaganda". If no one had
responded to this claim, some newbies may assume that that is fact, not knowing
that many people hold a different view on the subject.

This would also be the time to mention that, in my opinion, referring to
fakes as "unauthorized" restrikes, does lend them some air of legitimacy they
do not deserve.

The "minty white" inserts were printed in the mid to late 1980's.
They are "unauthorized" restrikes. They were most likely done "after hours" at
the same place the originals were printed years before (at one of the nss
printing facilities).....that is why the quality is just as good as the
originals.........that is why they fooled so many people......and that is why
they still fool people today. Some are virtually identical with the same art
cropping etc., and some have the artwork slightly cropped.

The list of titles is on our website.....some of these fake inserts
include: a clockwork orange -X rated, jaws, star wars, esb, rotj, scarface,
blade runner, manhattan.

There were also several unauthorized restrike one sheets printed
around the same time. They probably came from the same source as the minty
white inserts (at least that's my humble opinion!). The manhattan style b 1sh,
fast times 1sh, rocky horror 1sh, star wars a,b,c one sheets.....as well as
several others.

We have done several comparisons side by side and have close ups of
some of them (not all) on our site. They aren't all in one place though on the
website. Some of them (like scarface and manhattan) we haven't done only
because we haven't had a fake one and a real one in stock at the same time so
we could compare them side by side.

Anybody who thinks the minty white inserts are "real".....is flat out
wrong.
