Think of young Sinatra's angular facial features, his signature self
confidence, his lanky physique.

Anybody thinks Matt Dillon can pull it off?

Get serious guys, the actor who plays Sinatra in the film has to look like
the *young* Frank Sinatra, not the guy who just died a few years back. They
will need to start with young old blue eyes, hot and dynamic, then age him
through the years as the film progresses. That requirement scratches the
likes of De Niro, Nicholson, Pacino, Hopkins and all the rest of the old
guard off the list of practical choices. Kevin Spacey did a great job as
Bobby Darin in BEYOND THE SEA, but exactly because he has already played
Darin, he obviously can't be picked to play Sinatra as well. That sort of
thing just doesn't happen in Hollywood pre-production agreements. Besides,
BEYOND THE SEA was 7 years ago... Spacey is 51 years old now, really too far
along to effectively play the young teen and twenty-something Sinatra today.

Harry Connick, Jr. or Michael Buble maybe could pull it off, and would be
very intriguing choices, but would require a risk Scorsese probably isn't
willing to take at this point as to just how good either one under the
stress of carrying off a big feature role like this. Connick has plenty of
screen time, but nothing like this role so far. Buble has zero screen
credits and would be an even bigger risk. Plus, on the practical side again,
while they are well known as singers, neither of their names on the contract
would carry anywhere near the massive weight with the studios as far as
let's-make-a-deal and commit-to-a-big-budget that someone like DiCaprio
does.

I don't have a problem with DiCaprio's acting these days. He's grown up
quite at bit, now at 35 years old. He was very solid in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
and quite good in BLOOD DIAMOND. No reason to think that, under the hand of
a skilled director like Martin Scorsese, he can't turn in a fine performance
as Frank Sinatra -- particularly the *young* Sinatra, which will be critical
to the overall success of the film. Sure, there are plenty of other actors
in the same age bracket or younger who might do a better job, but even as a
Scorsese project, this film called for a Big Box Office Name in the leading
role to shepherd it through pre-production negotiations.

SInatra COULD have been one of his most memorable masterpieces, had he

De Niro. BUT, DiCaprio?? Ughh!

for that matter.

I'm looking forward to Sinatra, now that should be good!

Wouldn't mind at all, tho it was only meant as a humorous aside, and I fear
he may have a few more pressing projects up his sleeve. I'm still waiting in
anticipation for his documentary on British film that he's been working on
with Ms Schoonmaker for xx years now. With that, directing major new feature
films, and restoring old ones, he's certainly not a man who likes to sit
still.

Paul,

That is a slendid idea. I might suggest it to his secretary and archivist if
you don't mind me stealing your suggestion?
