But please, if we're going to keep talking about this, could we
please keep in mind that Andy is no more a victim here than I am or
Thierry is. He is as much a participant as we are.
I do agree with this to some point, however it is undeniable that he
has become a victim of a constant haranguing that seems unfair to
those of us who see him being attacked on NSF pretty strongly, and
now here on MoPo.
I like all of the forums myself, though clearly my participation on
MPF is less than the others. That's largely because I'm less
interested in the more recent posters (translation from an almost old
guy: posters from post 1975) in general, I also don't post very much
at the Classic Horror Film Board which is something much closer to
what I like, but I just don't have the time to post everywhere.
if I were to describe the differences of the forums:
MoPo is like a bunch of collectors standing around in different
groups having different conversations and people interchange between
the groups with partiers moving in and out of the various groups with
short quips. we even have a member who goes from one group to the
other repeating the things said in each group. I guess that's
supposed to keep them informed when they aren't all listening, much
like a TV sitcom explains a joke repeatedly. Then you have a few
members who from time to time get up on the chair to let everyone
know there are posters for sale which gets every member into a single
community group before pairing off to do deals
at APF you find what pretty much seems to be cordial scholarly
exchange which is the kind of chat that is most beneficial to the
hobby. For the most part, MoPo and APF are very similar, but APF is
more modern in construction while MoPo is a Victorian house.
MPF.. this is a professional construction that is representative of
the newer forum style with graphics. The population is younger and
very focused on specific areas of the hobby though, so as a total the
conversation might be less intellectual at times, but no less
informative. It can get somewhat raucous at times, and Andy rules
with a sometimes ham-fisted style. But I don't begrudge Andy his
right to do so as I know that ultimately he trying to pretty much
prevent what happened at Movie Poster Talk years ago leading to the
closing of that forum.
Classic Horror board. this is a great group of people sitting around
in a convention auditorium after the dealers room has closed talking
about every thing that made us love the medium. We are joined by the
guest speakers, the convention promoters, the historians, all the
collectors and the geeks. For information, I really don't think
anything comes close to the quality of CHFB
NSFGE.. while for the most part, I have always felt NSF to be the
place where it is most fun, it is also the ghetto of the forums. It's
the party house where the host doesn't care if you spill the punch
bowl on the white carpet, if you pee in the closet because you
couldn't make the bathroom and the host cracks up if you vomit in
your drinking buddy's lap spontaneously. But then you go out to the
garage and everyone there is secretly drinking martinis and champagne
showing each other expensive posters where the flotsam in the house
doesn't know the other party is...
