In the case of the restored MUMMY onesheet at Christie's London, even when seeing the poster in person, a photo WAS necessary to spot the damage. About one third or so of the poster had been missing, and was replaced. The restoration work was absolutely unbelievable. The poster was displayed shrink-wrapped, and while I'm sure it would have been possible to FEEL the replaced sections, it was impossible to SEE the damage, even when standing in front of the poster. When a poster was restored by one of the top guys in this business, a pre-restoration picture is absolutely mandatory, if you really want to judge the pre-restoration condition.
