I advise our consignors to do an inventory, but tell them to keep it in a safe place. We inventory their items in our own way (unlike some places which apparently only pretend to do so), so their inventory serves us no purpose. But it *IS *useful if later they have doubts that we auctioned all their items.
It is odd that in over 700,000 consignments we have only misplaced a tiny number of items (and we paid those consignors for those items, even though they eventually were located, at which time we offered to undo the payment or leave it as it was), and we have *NEVER *had even a single legal dispute with *ANY *of our consignors, where some other auctions have had many legal disputes. Of course, we could cut down on our staff and customer service (and greatly increase out profit), and then we would likely have lots of "lost items" and angry consignors. But some things are more important to us than higher profits, and we like to sleep well at night.
