I will not deny that such an action helps - and if an item is heavy stock paper then the only way to go is paper backing or gel backing.
However I have been in that situation and backed a poster and not had the desired result. In the end it is what the purchaser wishes to pay for. This Never Happened to the Other Fella.... The theory is that it might be worth getting the item backed to achieve a better price. The auction house often handles the backing for the client. Nothing at all wrong with that and it sometimes gets the desired result.
