Rosza was great even with his "later" scores. I'm thinking of his work in the
1979 low-budget Nicholas Meyer cult sci-fi pic, "Time After Time," with Malcolm
McDowell, Mary Steenburgen and David Warner, which had H.G. Wells in Victorian
garb chasing Jack the Ripper in modern-day San Francisco.
What gave me chills - and I can't find it anywhere online - was the music that
accompanied the opening credits - which Rosza decided to begin with the Warner
Brothers' classic-sounding "fanfare" - before segueing into a lush and ominous
sounding score that made this low-cost pic feel like it had been budgeted for
mega-millions.
I found an extract on You Tube at the link below - and while it does NOT
include the WB "fanfare" and opening credits - it does have a 4-minute sample
of how much more fun the pic was with Rosza's score:

I loved Rosza, so when we did a film music “spectacular” at the public radio
station I worked at in the mid-seventies, I did aninterview with him, arranged
by a friend Tom DeMary. Somehow Criterion found out about this, and used part
of the interview, which Tom fortunately had a copy of, in their release of THE
THIEF OF BAGHDAD. But only a small part of it. I have the whole thing and I
should present it somehow. In the Criterion, you don’t hear much of me. They
(mercifully!) edited me out largely.

quality and the fact that the music can find itself independent of the demands
of synchronization. Often times composers would compose something only to find
when they arrived on the scoring stage that a re-edit was done and the music
had to be re-synched or recomposed right on the spot because of a last minute
picture edit. I also enjoy hearing those recordings (even if sonically

TO QUO VADIS In 1959, when I saw BEN-HUR in Camera 65 for the first time, I was
not only in awe of the great spectacle married togreat direction, but I was
also swept up in love for the great music by Miklos Rozsa. So as soon as I
could get the coin together, I went to the record store and bought the
soundtrack in the big MGM box. That led to curiosity about the other Rozsa
scores, and that led to exposure to the Great Father to the score of BEN-HUR,
QUO VADIS. I soon discovered I loved it as well. I was delighted to see this
video on the website of Screen Archives Entertainment of the City of Prague
Philharmonic Orchestra playing the main title. They have just released a
two-CD set of the score.
