The only thing I can say is that it might be a good idea to change the foamcore
out in that one for the longterm. Remember, you don't get the acid free museum
conservation backing in your frames, so the poster is left to it's own devices
to continue degrading. Now, it will take time but since the posters themselves
have acid in them, that acid is what causes them to yellow and become brittle
over time...I'm sure you probably cleaned the plexigilass and channel of the
frame before you put it back together, but I'm sure the foamcore probably
absorbed some of that liquid and, again, that I might suggest changing out.
Next time you place an order, remind me and I will put a new piece of
foamcore in the box with your frames...

Good info!

On a lighter note I possibly have the zaniest story involving your frames!

Two years ago my mom gave me Russian tea mix, which creates a VERY dark hot
drink. Anyways I made a cup and carelessly roughly sat on my couch. The ENTIRE
full large cup’s contents hurled STRAIGHT BACK SMACK INTO THE MIDDLE of one of
your frames, which was protecting a $4K movie poster!

I naturally freaked out as the DARK BROWN liquid gushed down the frame front
and seeped through the lower front lip. The lower portion of the WHITE poster
quickly was saturated with liquid.

I jerked the frame off the wall but it took FIVE MINUTES to disassemble it!

The horror story ends well(ish). About 90% of the liquid drained off without
reaching the paper inside. The remaining 10% initially left a ghastly brown
stain covering 1/2 inch on both edges of the lower right of the 1935 paper.
Rather miraculously the dark liquid dried and mostly left no trace, just mild
water damage.

Stuptacular clumsiness on my part!

Well Mel....you get the Economy frame that comes with regular foamcore backing.
My Archival and Deluxe frame comes with Neilsen Bainbridge Artcare
Conservation foamcore. That product is not only 100% acid free, but
when they manufacture it, they put ingredients in it that actually neutralizes
whatever is in the frame and the environment around the frame. Not all
linenbackers use acid free fabric. They often use a masa paper that is
directly behind the poster and then the fabric and that masa paper is acid
free, but it's like a tissue and we dont' really know how long that will last
with fabric behind it that is not acid free. I have posters that I linenbacked
say 30 years ago with the top linenbackers of the day and some of them have
become brittle over time as the fabric has degraded.

So, it is always my recommendation on any poster of higher value that the
Artcare be the product that is used behind it. Regular acid free foamcore is
good, but it doesn't go that extra step of acid neutralization.

Two Qs for you:

1) Does acid-free backboard protect linen-backed posters? How? Doesn’t the
linen backing block the acidification from the backboard? Does it somehow go
around or through the thick linen?

2) Acid paper posters acidify internally. Does pressing them up against acid
backboards significantly speed up or worsen acidification?

Actually Mel....the Economy, as well as all my frames, have UV filtered
plexiglass, whether "clear" or "non glare" that is 91% UV filtered. I offer
the 99% if someone wants it....Thanks for the post.
