[Arlo] I am against them in a better world. Like Ant eloquently said, there is a role for programs aimed at correcting gross social injustices.
[Platt] By insulting blacks by saying they are incapable of being fully responsible for their own advancement? I don't think so. [Arlo] That's the problem, they often aren't. That's what these programs were designed to correct. You seem to think the utopic world where people are judged by the actions and not their skin color already exists. Sadly, too many are judged unequally by such irrelevant characteristics such as the color of their skin. [Platt] When you think the "racial divide" can be solved by treating blacks differently from everybody else, let me know. [Arlo] And that's the problem again. They ARE treated differently. Let me give you a pointed example. Two years ago my mother became executor of the estate of a cousin. However, to keep family civil she allowed his wife's family in on negotiating the house sale, since they lived nearby. We got a call one day telling us the pulled the house from the market, because they found out a black family was looking at it. So they lied and told the realtor they changed their minds. After a month, they put it back up for sale again, but we were told if any blacks looked at the house, they would pull it again. So, when you think blacks are not treated differently from everybody else, let me know. [Platt] I think the day will come a lot sooner if we stop treating skin-color as the badge of a victim. [Arlo] That day will come when we stop seeing skin-color altogether. We are obviously nowhere near that day. [Platt] Unemployment and poverty are not necessarily qualifying problems. That the crime rate did not increase significantly during the great depression put the lie to that old canard. Drugs, yes. Rap culture, which is primarily black, yes. [Arlo] Let me keep that unanswered, and look onto your next statement about whether or not intellect has failed only "blacks". [Platt] The failure of intellect has affected everyone, or don't you agree with Pirsig? [Arlo] And yet above you state that the "problems" do not effect whites (unless you mean as the victims of "black" crime). So let me ask, if "intellect's failure" is behind the rise of "black crime", why has it only given rise to this in "black communities"? [Arlo] Vigilance, not xenophobia. [Platt] Yes, viligance, not political correctness. [Arlo] Sadly, those who most loudly assault "political correctness" are the ones most likely to slide right into xenophobia.
