This book explains the concept clearly ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/069111532X) but actually comes to conclusions much different from those listed initially in this thread. It is based completely on statistical analysis of mitochondrial DNA and Y-chrosomes. Belief/disbelief in evolution seems to be part of the politics/religion debate series, but this book is interesting and explains the evidence in layman's terms, without making any leaps.
