This is a repetition of what I said to Matt, but will try a new
approach. Pirsig declaring Reality=Quality does not mean a
thing, it's the DQ/SQ that counts. The notion of a reality prior to a
metaphysically divide stems from the diagram-drawing in ZAMM
beginning with a motorcycle standing unscathed after a
theoretical division. This gives the impression of a Quality Reality
that remains behind after a metaphysically divide, and moreover
that this Reality is the "objective" entity, while the metaphysics is
an arbitrary arrangement that can be re-arranged without
effecting reality. Hence Pirsig's obsession with proving that
Reality=Quality and insisting that the MOQ is an arbitrary
arrangement of Quality (from his Summary of 2005)
The Metaphysics of Quality itself is static and should be
separated from the Dynamic Quality it talks about. Like
the rest of the printed philosophic tradition it doesn't
change from day to day, although the world it talks about
does.
But this notion plays straight into the hands of SOM, whose home
field is that of an objective reality "out there" that we make
subjective theories about. Pirsig tries to draw conclusions from
this (in Lila's Child I believe) by saying that the SOM is really a
"moq", i.e: Quality divided S/O-ishly, but a Q-SOM is just as
"bad" as the ordinary article. It's the divide that counts, and that
is all, there is no Quality above/behind/beyond the DQ/SQ divide.
IT IS REALITY!!.
And such a MOQ - free of SOM's tentacles by making it its own
4th. level makes for an enormous explanatory power and fulfills
many of the functions that LILA ascribes it, but that Pirsig's notion
of an intellectual level an innocent mindish compartment usurped
by SOM and that the MOQ will set free ....and his slow "feet
dragging" move towards a SOL, the last stand the "symbol
manipulation" definition of intellect. But how can "symbol
manipulation" meet MOQ's tenet of the upper level being a break
with its parent and/or the parent seeing it as dangerous? No way,
while the SOL meets all criterions. How/why Pirsig doesn't see
this and have tied himself in so may knots to avoid the SOL is a
mystery.
The best example of its power is its dissolving the SOM-induced
paradoxes in the same fashion that Newton physics dissolved the
Greek Physics-induced paradoxes, or (as we once spoke about)
how Copernicus dissolved the Ptolemaic Cosmology-induced
"circles within circles" mess.
