This is a repetition of what I said to Matt, but will try a new
approach. Pirsig declaring Reality=Quality does not mean a
thing, it's the DQ/SQ that counts. The notion of a reality prior to a
metaphysically divide stems from the diagram-drawing in ZAMM
beginning with a motorcycle standing unscathed after a
theoretical division. This gives the impression of a Quality Reality
that remains behind after a metaphysically divide, and moreover
that this Reality is the "objective" entity, while the metaphysics is
an arbitrary arrangement that can be re-arranged without
effecting reality. Hence Pirsig's obsession with proving that
Reality=Quality and insisting that the MOQ is an arbitrary
arrangement of Quality (from his Summary of 2005)
The Metaphysics of Quality itself is static and should be
separated from the Dynamic Quality it talks about. Like
the rest of the printed philosophic tradition it doesn't
change from day to day, although the world it talks about
does.
But this notion plays straight into the hands of SOM, whose home
field is that of an objective reality "out there" that we make
subjective theories about. Pirsig tries to draw conclusions from
this (in Lila's Child I believe) by saying that the SOM is really a
"moq", i.e: Quality divided S/O-ishly, but a Q-SOM is just as
"bad" as the ordinary article. It's the divide that counts, and that
is all, there is no Quality above/behind/beyond the DQ/SQ divide.
IT IS REALITY!!.

Experience. It is intellectual prejudice and assumption which defeat
SOM.
The DQ/SQ divide is the intellectual/reality divide. Pirsig says kill
intellectual patterns and morality is served. Reality is realized
More fully. Reality being patterns of Quality. Intellectualize all you
Want but doing so buries you deeper in SOM.
REALITY IS THE 5TH LEVEL!!!! MEtAPHYSICS is 4th level!.
The levels are 4th level, everything is fourth level
To human beings. Reality is a 4th level interpretation
Reality itself is indefinable and formless.
Quality aware of itself is limited and illusionary
Wrought with paradox if it mistakes it as true.
This is the breakthrough of MoQ.
