[Platt]
"The increase in versatility is directed toward Dynamic Quality. The
increase in power to control hostile forces is directed toward static
quality. Without Dynamic Quality the organism cannot grow. Without
static quality the organism cannot last. Both are needed." (Lila, 11)
Agree?
Ron:
This Quote is exactly the view that I'm trying to express to you.
I see balance as increase in versatility, whereas I see
Superiority as increase in power to control...
What are your thoughts?
[Krimel]
Or think of it this way. To say a relationship is balanced is to say
that it
is stable. All forces tensions and variations in the relationship, while
they may be variable are constant to some degree. Balance is a function
of
the range of variability. A rock on the ground has an imperceptible
range of
variation. The relationship between the rock and the ground varies in
geological time.
A foot on a tight rope is a much more tenuous relationship. Change
occurs in
milliseconds and constant variation is required to maintain the balance.
Smaller forces are required to disrupt it.
It takes a pick and a shovel to separate the rock from the ground and a
puff
of breeze to remove foot from rope.
I hope we all are that the tightrope walker is in a much more dynamic
relationship than the rock. And yet the very static quality of the
rock's
relationship allows other kinds of relations to occur. Lichens and molds
can
grow on it. Insects or burrowing creature find shelter beneath it.
Increasing levels of stability allow dynamic interaction in increasingly
subtle and complex ways. We exist in a space and time that allows subtle
and
complex creatures like us discuss such matters because most of the
'hostile
forces' that could destroy us are not so much 'controlled' as canceled
out
by other forces that could destroy us.
I would tend to say that as the greater forces fall into balance, the
increasing subtlety and complexity that arise are Good. What we have
seen so
far on planet earth is a drift toward balance, subtlety and complexity.
I am
even willing to call this as a drift toward 'betterness'.
Ron:
Its "better-ness" if one values existence , but I'm with you.
