With profound apologies to the spirit of Hunter Thompson, a brilliant journalist who's Hell's Angels I read every year before riding season...
A few forgotten posts ago, Platt lamented the loss of "free speech" in this country by bemoaning the release of Geraldine Ferraro from the Clinton campaign for saying "Obama is only winning because he is black". To this, I had asked (several times, each ignored), what if she had said "the only reason the republicans had nominated McCain is that he is a white man"? What would your response have been? Would you have considered this remark "racist"? While I never expected an answer (for obvious reasons), I just read on CNN that the Obama campaign has let go one of its advisors for saying "Sen. Hillary Clinton [has] an advantage over Sen. Barack Obama in the presidential race because she is white." Is his statement racist? Should we condemn his but not Ferraro's? What if it were said about McCain? Are the defenders of free speech going to rush to the aid of Wright as they appear to be doing for Ferraro?
