This would be to suggest that scientism,
standard empiricism and the two cultures
are behind us, surely not?

Taylor is a great historian of ideas, if you want
to see how religion, poetry, the novel, politics, philosophy, the 
Enlightenment
and Romanticism, etc create modernity and its naturalist novelties
his Sources of the Self and Secular Age tell this story better than any
other version I know, they cannot be reduced to simple proposals.
